ENCOUNTERS WITH ART: Grigor Khanjyan: The Mystery of the Mural
- Date 03 Feb 2011
The first Encounters with Art event in 2011, held on the first Thursday of February, was dedicated to Armenian artist Grigor Khanjyan and his famous mural. It was the first time since the CCA’s opening that a public event focused on the mural, its creation and history. Instead of the expected 100 guests, more than 160 visitors attended.
Vahagn Marabyan, the Acting Executive Director of CCA opened the evening with welcoming remarks, emphasizing the Center’s commitment to preserving the mural according to the highest international standards. Architect of the Cascade Complex, Jim Torosyan, shared his memories of Khanjyan and thanked the organizers. Fr. Asoghik Karapetian, Head of the Museum, Library and Archives of Holy Etchmiadzin, spoke about the mural’s creation history. Art historian Varditer Gamaghelyan delivered an introductory lecture on the mural and the artist.
At the end of the first part, Khanjyan’s children—Ara and Seda—welcomed the guests and expressed gratitude to the Center. During the intermission, visitors enjoyed a reception and exchanged impressions. After the break, a 1998 documentary featuring an open conversation with the artist was screened, offering new insights into Khanjyan’s personality and work. The event was a great success and was covered by Shoghakat and Yerkir Media TV channels.
