Peter Woytuk was born in 1958 in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. After studying art in college, he shifted toward large-scale sculpture later in his career.

Woytuk began working with foundries in Thailand and China, where the tradition of making enormous Buddha statues has made them uniquely equipped to handle large amounts of molten metal used to produce his works.

Kiwi (2011), a smooth, rotund representation of the long-beaked Australian bird, is painted in vibrant blue. With its legs upturned, the bird appears to be playfully bouncing while holding a silver ball in its beak.

The statue came to the Cafesjian Center for the Arts from New York, where it was previously exhibited on Broadway as part of a menagerie of animal sculptures by Woytuk placed along the avenue.
